The marketing activities begin before there is a product to sell. Many people think marketing is just selling the goods or services.

It's the job of marketing to decide WHAT core product, actual product, and augmented product to be delivered to the customers.

Before a business runs and generate the money, there must be an opportunity in the market and product to be made to satisfy and meet the market demand. It's marketing's job to define what those opportunities are and what the strategy to satisfy the market demand appropriately.

Marketers analyze the markets, market gaps, trends, products, competition, distribution channels, and marketing strategy to come up with opportunities to make money.


2. Competitive strategy/positioning


Markets consists of groups of competitors competing for satisfying the people's need. The job of marketing is to decide how to create a defensible sustainable competitive advantage against competitors.

Marketers conceives strategies, tactics, and business models to make the product or service delivered to the right customer at the right time with the right price.


3. Demand generation/management


It's the job of the marketers to create and sustain a demand for a company's products. Marketers manage this demand by educating the marketing, and influencing the probability and frequency of people's purchase behavior.


4. Sales


The ultimate goal of marketing is to make money by increasing the sales. In most companies sales is a different discipline and department from marketing. But if salespeople want to have long term success in a company they must be led by marketing team.

The better job a company does of identifying opportunities, creating a differential sustainable competitive advantage, and generating demand for their products the easier it will be for salespeople to make sales.
