Today, we will talk about the art of marketing. Why I post this article? Because many people ask whether marketing is science or technology or art.


In my humble opinion, it depends on from where we look and implement it. At college majoring economic (academic's term), marketing is learned as a science. Student learn about it as his knowledge and try to get “A” for it.


But, from practitioner's perspective who apply marketing knowledge in the real world or we can say in their business, they use marketing knowledge as a technique or tools to achieve more profit.

There is people who treat marketing as an art, because they only do that theoretically in most of cases and they treat this as an art.

Is Marketing an Art or Science?

The big debate in the marketing discipline is whether marketing is an art or a science. Marketing is a technology or set of technologies. Marketing can be neither an art nor a science because arts and sciences only seek to explain natural phenomena.


The objective of marketing is to manipulate and influence natural phenomena to create practical unnatural outcomes. Specifically to manufacture, grow, sustain and defend markets. Marketers use their knowledge of economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology and strategy to arrange and control the external environment to their advantage.
